How nutrition helped three women turn back the clock
I want to share an inspiring statement from one of my clients, Nan: “I never thought of myself as attractive, but today, at 65, I’m actually feelingbeautiful for the first time,” she says. “It’s like I have a secret that has reconnected me with my true potential. I am now excited for the future instead of feeling washed up.”
Many of the other clients I’ve worked with—men and women of all ages—have the same “secret” as Nan. Most struggled as she did with out-of-control food cravings, yo-yo dieting, or eating disorders. They learned the secret to sticking to a healthful diet without struggle or willpower, and experienced dramatic health improvements, weight loss, and changes in appearance that seemed to turn back the clock.
Here are three of my clients whose dramatic transformations are excellent examples of “aging in reverse.”
Cheryl from Alberta, Canada, a 50-year-old mother of five, once suffered from high blood pressure, diabetes, IBS, and what she describes as “food prison.” She has seen virtually all of these health challenges disappear. “My blood pressure, blood lipid, and blood sugar numbers all fell back to normal, and I was able to stop taking my prescription meds for each,” she reports.
Cheryl’s health turnaround began after attending one of my Total Transformation retreats in Lake Tulloch, Calif., where she learned to completely revamp her diet by dramatically cutting down on carbs and sugar, increasing intake of fats (in my program, whole-fat dairy, avocado, olive oils, grass-fed meat, and eggs are all on the menu—trans-fats are not), and learning to listen to her body’s cues. “I was amazed that by the time I got back to Canada a week later, all that cruddy food in the supermarket was no longer appetizing to me,” she says. “My energy and productivity went through the roof. My friends were stunned, not only by how I looked, but how I was around food. No more portion control or negativity around food! I am down 35 pounds. Friends say it looks like I’ve lost 50. But the real miracle to me is that all of this happened without willpower or suffering.”
And Cheryl has noticed other changes. “My rosacea is even clearing,” she says. “I feel and look better now than I have in, easily, 15 years. I’m learning to ride a motorcycle and taking life by the horns again.”
Melissa, a 48-year-old mother of six from Ohio, once suffered from a frightening litany of health issues, including clinical obesity, metabolic syndrome, sleeplessness, hypothyroidism, low energy, adult acne, carpel tunnel syndrome, frequent migraines, and fierce food cravings.
“No diet had ever kept me from overeating until this zero-sugar food approach,” says Melissa. “The first two days felt strange, and I experienced lower-than-usual-energy as my body adapted, but after three days, I realized that I no longer desired sugar or carbs. A day or so later, I could only eat just a few bites of things before feeling full!”
Over the next three months Melissa lost 52 pounds. And she noticed other changes. Her carpel tunnel pain and migraines ceased after only two weeks. Soon after, her nurse practitioner confirmed via email that her metabolic syndrome, high blood pressure, elevated liver enzymes, and many other problems had virtually resolved.
“Today, I’m told I look like a different person,” she says. “People guess that I’m in my 20s, and I’m in my late 40s. I can easily keep up with my kids, and no longer need to take naps. Everybody asks, ‘Is it hard to do?’ And my answer must be the hardest part for them to understand: “‘It has actually been easy. There are no cravings or willpower needed.’”
A few months from 50, Colorado fitness instructor Jennifer saw her perimenopausal symptoms rear their ugly head (e.g., hot flashes, irritability, bloat, and weight gain), in spite of many health changes she had already made, such as switching to organic food and healthy sweeteners. She was put on thyroid medication and diagnosed with severe adrenal exhaustion and candida yeast overgrowth. The bioidentical hormone therapy her doctor had recommended helped somewhat, but she was still tired all the time, and just couldn’t lose weight and keep it off.
“I’m an active person and was finding myself on the couch more and more often,” she says.
Jennifer’s changes didn’t happen overnight—she continued to crave carbs and sugar for the first five to six days on my plan. Then, things began to change. “One day I realized that I wasn’t falling asleep in the late afternoon like I usually did. After teaching a fitness class, several of my students came up and said they loved the class and asked what had gotten into me. My energy level was off the charts!”
About a month into her new food and supplement regimen, Jennifer celebrated with some wine on her 50th birthday. “I could really feel what it was like to be off track,” she recalls. “Wine no longer tasted great. I also used to be able to drink coffee late at night and not feel any effect. Now, a little chocolate sends me into hyper-drive.”
Her new dietary approach also shows on the outside. “A perfect stranger commented on how radiant my face looked. Hearing that for the first time at 50 years old is quite gratifying.”
Jennifer has not only lost weight, but also gained muscle. “I’m noticing a new curve at my waist, and a flatter stomach,” she says. “My irritability, bloating, and hot flashes are gone. In the past I would work out and feel nothing but tired. Now I’m energized. I’ve decided to train for a half marathon this summer.”

LEPTIN: THE “SECRET” TO SLIM?
A common side benefit of a healthier diet is a healthier response to the hormone leptin. Healthy leptin response can take you from a fat-conserving “famine mode” to a state in which your body burns fat for energy. Leptin is what triggers the “fullness signal” that keeps you from overeating. Additionally, leptin has been shown to increase muscle-to-fat ratio independent of exercise. It’s possible to resensitize the cells to leptin through a low-carb diet high in healthy fats. I’ve seen evidence of this happening in as little as three days in my clients.
