Quick-Fix Beauty

No time for a good night’s sleep or a day of pampering? Fake it with these fast fixes.

Let’s face it, there’s never a good time for a beauty emergency—and that’s especially true during the hectic holidays. The next time you’re faced with a grooming crisis, don’t panic! Instead, reach into our grab-bag of tips and tricks to help you naturally overcome some of the most common beauty saboteurs in a hurry.

Problem: You’ve Got a Case of Raccoon Eyes

Quick Fix: For dark undereye circles caused by too little sleep, apply a botanical- and mineral-based concealer in a shade slightly lighter than your natural skin tone. Since the skin under your eyes is fairly thin and contains few oil glands, opt for a creamy formulation boasting plant oils to minimize the appearance of fine lines.

Problem: You Wake Up with Puffy Eyes

Quick Fix: Lie down and place cold cucumber slices over closed eyes for 10 minutes. You can also use damp, well-chilled chamomile tea bags as a compress. Either of these tricks will drain away accumulated fluids and reduce swelling under the eyes. Follow with an anti-inflammatory eye cream that contains an organic coffee extract. The caffeine from the coffee will continue to drain the fluid from under your eyes as you go about your day.

Problem: Your Eyes Look Tired

Quick Fix: Carefully rim the inside of your lower lid with a white eye pencil to instantly brighten the whites of your eyes and make you look wide awake.

Problem: Your Lips Are Dry and Flaky

Quick Fix: To smooth parched, peeling lips, mix up a quick lip scrub by combining a pinch of granulated sugar with enough honey to moisten. Gently massage the scrub over your lips using a circular motion. Wipe away the excess and slather lips with a rich lip balm packed with plant oils to seal in moisture.

Problem: You’ve Sprouted a Blemish

Quick Fix: Whatever you do, don’t pop it! Squeezing only irritates skin, making it redder and more swollen. Instead, ice the pimple for a few minutes to reduce inflammation. Then dab it with an herbal zit stick boasting tea tree oil, willow bark, and lavender essential oil before covering with a natural liquid or cream concealer.

Problem: Your Skin is Parched

Quick Fix: Harsh winter winds and frigid temperatures can leave skin dry and flaky. Relieve chapped hands, as well as rough feet and elbows, by slathering on a generous dose of moisturizer that contains shea butter. Reapply often to help seal in moisture.

Problem: Your Face Develops an Oil Slick

Quick Fix: Keep overactive oil glands under control with blotting papers. Made from flax or rice, these absorbent papers are a better choice than face powder, which can mix with oil to create a caked-on look. Press, don’t rub, the sheet against your skin so you don’t ruin the rest of your makeup.

Problem: Your Cuticles Are Dehydrated and Raggedy

Quick Fix: Massage a bit of cuticle cream into nail beds. Don’t have any cream handy? Try some olive or avocado oil. Work into cuticles and fingernails for nails that look instantly well-groomed.

Problem: Your Hair Looks Flat

Quick Fix: Instead of reaching for the blow dryer before you head out the door, try a natural volumizer or root-lifting spray. Simply lift sections of your hair and spray the product on the roots. Let your hair fall naturally for a pretty, party-ready style.

Problem: Your Hair Is Frizzy and Dull

Quick Fix: Smooth and shine unruly hair in one easy step by rubbing a tiny amount of almond oil onto the palms of your hands, then gently smoothing the top layer of hair. You can also tame your locks with ready-to-use product that contains botanical butters, essential oils, or kelp extract.

Problem: You Suddenly Get Sweaty

Quick Fix: Whether it’s caused by temperature, nerves, or a hormonal imbalance, a sweat emergency needn’t turn into an odor crisis. Since sweat is naturally odorless until it comes in contact with bacteria on your skin, mop up dampness with a paper towel and dab natural antibacterial hand gel under your arms to neutralize unpleasant odors.
